JRockit Now Distributed with Oracle ECM Products

You may have noticed that ECM Licensing Document and OTN downloads were recently updated to include Oracle JRockit JVM with Content Conversion Server, ECM Suite, Universal Content Management, Universal Content Management Standard Edition, and Universal Records Management.

These Oracle ECM products are now certified with JRockit JDK 6, Oracle's Java Virtual Machine built on Oracle Fusion Middleware (formerly BEA JRockit). It provides customers on Windows, Linux and Solaris platforms with an alternative implementation option to the Sun JDK 1.5+. For detailed certification information, check out the certification matrix for each product on OTN.

Visit OTN if you'd like to learn more about Oracle JRockit JVM.

Support Extensions for I/PM and UCM 10gR3 (Updated)

Update to original Post: Oracle recently created a new Oracle Lifetime Support Policy PDF specifically for Fusion Middleware Products. It should make it easier to identify Oracle Enterprise Content Management Releases.

If you haven't come across the Oracle Lifetime Support Policy PDF for Fusion Middleware on Oracle.com, I encourage you to bookmark it. Starting on page 12, it provides a chart that walks through the 10gR3 releases as well as the Stellent and Captovation releases and details when premier and extended support ends. As many of you know, Oracle provides Sustaining support indefinitely for products. Details for each level of support are also included in this data sheet.

I have some good news! Due to the timing of the Stellent acquisition, 10gR3 of our ECM products were released in May 2007 (instead in 2006 with other Fusion Middleware 10gR3 releases). We understand many organizations have recently upgraded to 10gR3 or are currently in the process. Because of this, Oracle has extended Premier and Extended Support End dates for Imaging and Process Management as well as Universal Content Management - with Extended Support reaching out until 2015. The Oracle Lifetime Support Policy PDF for Fusion Middleware continues to reflect these recent changes.

Site Studio 10gR4 Sample Site

Joe already blogged about the Site Studio 10gR4 samples and viewlets. The viewlets show how to do key Site Studio tasks, and the samples provide some Site Studio 10gR4 “artifacts” (element definitions, region definitions and templates, etc.) to get started with.

Along with the artifact samples is a new Site Studio Samples site designed to showcase them. This site isn't a traditional sample site. Instead, it presents the "sample" Site Studio objects in a self-documenting way. It’s built with Site Studio, so it’s sort of like an object browser built with the objects it is browsing.

Leaving aside the mind-bending aspects of it, here’s what the sample site looks like. In this screen shot, we've navigated through a region definition, and are now looking at the templates that "know" how to format content authored to that region definition. Note the dependency documentation in the right column.

Region%20Template.jpg

All the other sample Site Studio objects - page templates, element definitions, region definitions, and subtemplates - are presented in a similar manner and can be accessed using the vertical navigation on the left. The site comes as an archive, and can be loaded into any UCM instance with Site Studio 10gR4 enabled. Tell us what you think about this approach - both the samples themselves, and the site to view them in.

New Clean Content Component Available for Download

Some of you might have noticed that we recently added a new component called "UCM Clean Content Component" to the UCM Document Management 10gR3 bundle. If you haven't downloaded it yet, you'll find it on the Universal Content Management Product Download page on OTN under the "Oracle Universal Content Management Document Management 10gR3" section.

So what is "Clean Content?" Clean Content is Oracle's really cool SDK that allows you to examine Office documents for hidden content, and if desired, scrub the hidden information from the files. It has been available to Oracle Outside In Technology OEM customers for quite some time, and now we're making it available to UCM customers. Clean Content nicely complements the suite of content filtering and extraction technology offered by Oracle to OEM and UCM customers.

Why is this useful? Many Microsoft Office documents contain hidden content that you're not aware of and would not want exposed to a wide audience. For example, Word documents might contain hidden comments, deleted slides from PowerPoint files might still be in the file, or Excel files that connect to databases might contain database user names, passwords and other connection information that you don't want released.

The Clean Content Component for UCM 10gR3 uses Oracle's Clean Content technology to allow users to examine managed documents for hidden content. The component provides a service that analyzes a managed document, and generates a Document Risk Analysis Report. Users can access this functionality via the "Examine Document" option in the "Action" menu on the Content Information page of the desired item. The component does not automatically scrub content at this time (for example, before publishing files to an extranet or at the end of the workflow before saving the final revision). However, we look forward to adding that functionality in a future release -- stay tuned!

Fun with Site Studio 10gR4 Placeholders, Part 1

In Site Studio 10gR4, a placeholder tag designates a spot where some sort of managed content gets fed into a page template. Placeholders are the 10gR4 Site Studio’s more flexible version of “contribution regions”, which are still supported for backward compatibility.

By default, placeholders allow contributors to assign or create content at that location. But placeholders can also take parameters, which allow you to manipulate them in interesting ways that would have been difficult with previous versions of Site studio. In this post, I’ll introduce two of the key parameters and show some common uses.

One important parameter a placeholder can take is the Content ID of a data file. This is done by adding a dataFileDocName parameter to the placeholder. This parameter tells Site Studio to use a specific data file, rather than looking what data file was assigned by contributors and stored in the project file. In fact, when a data file parameter is put onto a placeholder, the ability for end users to assign content – i.e. create new or reuse content and assign it to this placeholder – is suppressed, because we don’t want to mislead users into thinking that the “switch” action will accomplish anything.

Why would you want to do this?

Consider a footer. You want users to manage and edit the footer, but you don’t want them to have to assign it for every page. So you can reference a specific data file in the placeholder for the footer. That way, the same data file will be used everywhere, but at the same time you still get the in-context editing so users can change it. A placeholder that references a footer might look like:

<!--$wcmPlaceholder("Ravenna Footer","dataFileDocName=RVI_FOOTER")-->

And the finished footer might look like:

Footer2_620.jpg

If you want to do the same thing but don't need a backing data file - you simply want to include a chunk of markup or script, optionally with additional placeholders - you can reference a sub template from your placeholder using the templateDocName parameter. A placeholder with a templateDocName reference looks like this, where "RVI_FOOTER" in this case is the dDocName of a sub template rather than a data file:

<!--$wcmPlaceholder("Ravenna Footer","templateDocName=RVI_FOOTER")-->

Upcoming posts will look at how to use placeholders to do personalization and A/B testing, and how to use placeholders to make flexible templates.

Site Studio 10gR4 External Application Support

Site Studio 10gR4 allows external applications to display and edit web content created and stored within UCM by simply executing two new custom services via http. The two new services are “WCM_PLACEHOLDER” and “WCM_BEGIN_EDIT_SESSION”. Correct usage of these services will allow the designer to include a fully editable Site Studio specific XML Datafile into their application.

POTENTIAL USAGE:
Calling the “WCM_PLACEHOLDER” service via http, and passing in the appropriate parameters can return a datafile in a number of different formats. The content that is returned can be embedded into virtually any application. Executing the “WCM_BEGIN_EDIT_SESSION” service via http will launch the Site Studio FCK contributor application, and allow changes to be made to the datafile. Functionality includes, but is not limited to:
1. Viewing datafile content within an external application (HTML/JSP/PHP/ASP etc.).
2. Launching the FCK Contributor from an external application
3. Viewing and editing Dynamically Converted content within an external application
4. Viewing and editing Dynamic Lists/Static Lists from an external application
5. Viewing and editing of Site Studio content within a Portal

PORTAL UTLIZATION RULES:
If the Content Server exists in an environment that can be viewed by the client browser loading the portal, then there should be no issues with executing the services via HTTP.
If the Portal Server has a trusted connection to a Content Server located behind a firewall, the ability to execute the services is limited. In this environment, the client browser would generally makes a call to a JSP on the app server. That JSP would then makes an HTTPRequest to the Content Server to execute the WCM_Placeholder services. The pages returned will more than likely have links to images/CSS/JS assets on the Content Server. When the page loads in the client, it won't be able to see these items, unless a proxy was created that could convert them locally. The forthcoming Site Studio for JDeveloper contains a proxy to address this requirement.
