The knowledge required by the typical Oracle DBA has increased, requiring additional skills and in some cases job responsibilities. Oracle Certified Masters Joel Goodman and Harald van Breederode discuss this shift in DBA skills in this 10-page PDF booklet: "Performing an Oracle DBA 1.0 to DBA 2.0 Upgrade - Insights into the Expansion of the DBA Skill Set."

This is a fine article on the upgrade from DBA 1.0 to DBA 2.0. When I was at HOTSOS in dallas in 2005, there where a lot off younger DBA's talking about things like you old DBA 1.0 DBA's are over the hill. But keeping up with new developments like Enterprise Manager Grid Control and RAC and Oracle Streams and Data Guard and Maximum Avialability Archictecture and a work approach that is an optimum between GUI and Command Line work approach and a don't be afraid of new developments attitude help upgrading to DBA 2.0 smoothly. Also diving into OS like UNIX, LINUX and Windows Server 2008 help with a better work performance. Also RMAN can greatly improve work in combination with Enterprise manager Grid control. And diving into new products like Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g and Hyperion are a big help in future job roles for the DBA. New developments with Oracle VM help to think about out of the box installs on Server racks.
All in all a good booklet that gives food for thoughts.

If one keeps up with all of the new developments the transition from DBA 1.0 to DBA 2.0 is smooth and soundless. But an interesting booklet.
