ISV Path to SaaS (part 1)

We often talk to ISV partners and SaaS companies we meet with about The Path to SaaS. As we have launched the new SaaS for ISVs model (more info in prior posts), I have received many questions on where to get started when working with Oracle in building a SaaS business.

One good place to start is by reading Whitepaper: Oracle SaaS Platform: Building On-Demand Applications (PDF). This provides an excellent overview of the Oracle Platform for SaaS.

Stay tuned for the next step on the Path to SaaS.

ISV Path to SaaS: Data Architecture

Data Architecture is a much discussed subject when ISVs are starting down the Path to SaaS. Working with an Oracle Database, there are 3 ways to approach Data Architecture:

  1. Separate Databases
  2. Shared Database, Separate Schemas
  3. Shared Database, Shared Schema

This SaaS Data Architecture White Paper can help an ISV determine the trade-offs involved with each approach.

These considerations are mapped to two key factors:

  1. Simplicity Of Deployment

  2. Maintenance & Scalability

In addition, ISVs need to evaluate the market specific requirements of their customers. SMB buyers will likely have a different set of evaluation criteria than Financial Services companies.
