In this tutorial, we show how to implement native web services integration to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne from Oracle SOA Suite 11gR1.

There are several new features in Fusion Middleware 11g that enable the creation of Service Oriented Architectures with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications and to develop business processes and composite applications using the relevant Fusion Middleware technology.

New features include:

Simplified development experience via support for Service Component Architecture and the SOA Composite Editor (JDeveloper)

Enhanced human workflow offers new JSF based rich client framework, ADF task flow forms and integration with Microsoft Office

WebCenter Spaces to facilitate efficient interaction and collaboration among project teams

Unified management and monitoring capability, including end-to-end instance tracking across all service engines

Automated upgrade path from 10g

Robust performance and scalability via the underlying WebLogic Application Server infrastructure

While a detailed discussion (or the list) of the new features is outside the scope of this discussion, this whitepaper talks about "What's new in Oracle SOA Suite 11g".

Tutorial overview

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne supports native web services and exposes a number of functions as Business Services. We show how BPEL makes a service call out to a JD Edwards web service to retrieve the customer credit information. The resulting data is then transformed to output only the fields of interest.

Software Used

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Apps 8.12 with Tools 8.97

Oracle SOA Suite version 11gR1 (available for download from OTN)

Oracle JDeveloper version 11gR1 (available for download from OTN)

Implementation

The main process steps are:

Generate a WSDL in EnterpriseOne for Customer Credit information*

Create a synchronous BPEL process to consume this WSDL.

Transform the resulting output from getCustomerCreditInfo operation into the desired format.

Note:

We assume step #1 has already been executed. Details on exposing a web service and generating the corresponding WSDL are available here.

The WSDL and the schema used in steps #2 and #3 are available here and here.

At the dinner table the other night one of my kids asked me, “Dad, what is it exactly that you do for your job?” To which my wife echoed, “Yeah, what do you do, exactly?” The answer isn’t a short one. I’m a product manager. My day is usually chopped into small slices of product planning, prioritizing features, writing requirements, talking with customers and partners, explaining things to field personnel, and dozens of other “interrupt-driven” activities. After fifteen minutes of explaining what I do each day the entire family was bewildered to boredom. So my son tried a different angle: “What’s the best thing about your job?” That one is easier to answer, straight and to the point: the best thing about my job is seeing our customers succeed using the products we build.

Take Arcturus Realty Corporation for example. They manage millions of square feet of real estate across Canada. They are putting JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and Oracle technology to good use to make their business run better. Their adoption of Oracle technology wasn’t so much a “Big Bang” as it is a step-by-step journey toward increasing return-on-investment. Back in 2001 their predecessor company started off like so many other JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customers running JD Edwards OneWorld Xe on the IBM iSeries platform. Sound familiar? By 2006, in response to some market and economic turmoil (sound familiar?) Arcturus was given the mandate to drastically reduce their IT cost structure. As a short-term step, they migrated their JDE E1 implementation to x86 hardware running Microsoft Windows and Microsoft SQL Server. To save additional cost they also decided to let a partner, AITO Solutions Ltd., host their infrastructure. By 2007, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne’s adoption of Oracle technology was mature and mainstream, and the Oracle Technology Foundation licensing was very attractive. At that point Arcturus, as we say, “went Red Stack” by converting their entire JDE E1 infrastructure to Oracle technology, including Oracle Enterprise Linux, Oracle Database, and Oracle Internet Application Server. But that was just the beginning of the journey. John Chung, Arcturus’ VP of IT, has that enviable combination of technical aptitude and imagination. Before long he was drafting (quite literally on a cocktail napkin at Collaborate 2008!) plans to implement additional Oracle Fusion Middleware components, such as Oracle BPEL PM and Oracle BI Publisher, to streamline some burdensome business processes. From the plateau of a successful pilot project, John can see the panorama of possibilities for follow-on projects using Oracle Fusion Middleware. Now John is running out of cocktail napkins.

Who are some other JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customers who are employing Oracle technology to meet their business challenges? Perhaps the best catalog of success stories is held in the proceedings from past conferences such as Oracle OpenWorld and Quest Collaborate. These are the customers who come forward to freely share their success stories with their peers. Some are simply using Oracle Database and Oracle Internet Application Server to satisfy basic JDE E1 infrastructure prerequisites. Others are reaching deeper into the Oracle Fusion Middleware portfolio, for example, leveraging Oracle SOA Suite components with JDE E1 Business Services to streamline integrations. I find it fascinating to peruse the conference archives to see just how innovative JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customers can be. If you have an implementation of JDE E1 with Oracle Fusion Middleware, I encourage you to share your story with your peers at a local user group, a regional gathering, or one of our big annual events.

So, to all our customers who are already benefitting from using JD Edwards EnterpriseOne with underlying Oracle technology, thanks for making my job satisfying. And to all our customers who are in the process of implementing, or just contemplating using Oracle technology with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, thanks for giving me a reason to hurry into work tomorrow.

The recent BEA acquisition augments Oracle SOA Suite with BEA's AquaLogic Service Bus (henceforth referred to as the Oracle Service Bus). OSB offers a lightweight Enterprise Service Bus to connect, mediate and manage interactions between heterogeneous services and legacy applications. The go-forward strategy is to offer a unified service bus architecture that combines the respective strengths of the (existing) Oracle Enterprise Service Bus and the (newer) OSB, in addition to providing an automated upgrade path for existing customers.

In this tutorial, we demonstrate some of the core OSB features.

Tutorial overview

The core OSB features showcased are:

Connectivity, via the ability to access and integrate applications using a standards based approach (SOAP).

Messaging and Routing: Once connectivity is established, incoming data and messages are routed to their appropriate destination. Routing decisions are usually based on headers, content or other external rules.

We show how Oracle Service Bus makes a service call out to a JD Edwards Enterprise One web service. OSB then routes the response to the appropriate business service, using content based routing (CBR). Two sample payload files (customer-a and customer-b) are provided for reference.

Use Case

Incoming loan applications at a financial services company are routed through OSB to determine the appropriate business service to process the application, depending on the applicant’s credit limit.

OSB makes a service callout to JD Edwards Enterprise One to obtain the applicant's credit limit. If the credit limit is <= $100k, the application is routed to the “regular-loan” business service for processing; all other applications are routed to the “jumbo-loan” business service.

The tutorial uses a file system to represent the two business services.

Implementation

The main steps in the process are:

Generate and publish the WSDL for the JD Edwards web service.

Implement CBR in the Oracle Service Bus and define the relevant business services: regular-loan and jumbo-loan.

Implement an OSB service callout to the JD Edwards web service; route the response containing the credit limit using CBR to the appropriate business service.

Upon successful execution, the messages are routed to the appropriate business service.
