ClassNotFound: How To Find The Missing Library

There are numerous ADF libraries and it may cause you problems when you get a ClassNotFound exception.

Luckily there is a small search utility in the "Add Library" and the "Manage Libraries" dialogs as shown in the next figure:

New JDeveloper Blog - Steve Muench's Interview

I see that Chris Muir has just begun blogging on http://one-size-doesnt-fit-all.blogspot.com/
I remember having had some interesting discussions with Chris about LOVs (List Of Values) in UIX and having seen one of the applications he had developped - very nice one.
Chris is also an active member in the JDeveloper forum.
I added a link to Chris's blog under the LINKS section.

His first entry is an interview of Steve Muench - interesting to read for anybody having some interests in ADF.

Chapter 6 of "Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms & PL/SQL Developers" on OTN

In a previous post, I recommended the book "Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms & PL/SQL Developers
and referred to the Chapter 6 - Business Services in ADF as example.
This chapter can now be downloaded from OTN [Here] (PDF)

Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms & PL/SQL Developers

Duncan's and Peter's book "Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms & PL/SQL Developers: A Guide to Web Development with Oracle ADF"  is out:

JDev4Forms:

See Duncan's announcement on his blog.

I had the opportunity to participate to the review and I found it excellent.
That's definitely the book I needed 2 years ago when I decided to move from the Designer to the JDeveloper support.
It explains all the J2EE concepts you should understand to develop your applications with ADF Faces and ADF Business Components.

For example, Chapter 6 - Business Services in ADF answers the following questions, common when developing an application:

  • How do I issue a query to the database?
  • How can I update data?
  • How do I Generate a Primary Key Value?
  • How do I handle transactions?
  • How does record locking work?
  • Where is the login dialog?
  • How do I define business rules?
  • How can I dynamically change a query?
  • How can I interface ADF BC with PL/SQL?
By reading the answers to these questions, the reader learns progressively the ADF Business Components (Application Module, Entity Object, View Object).
NB: you can find a free copy of this Chapter [Here] (PDF)

The book explains the technologies used when developing application with JDeveloper, demonstrates the development of an application through hands-on practices, presents some best practices, ...
Though it's intended to Forms and PL/SQL developers, experienced Java develoeprs can learn more about creating JavaServer Faces applications with the Application Developer Framework in JDeveloper.

Book also includes a chapter for JHeadstart.

A Must on the bookshelf of many developers.

Good reading! :)

JDeveloper 10.1.3 Applications Deployed in the Oracle Application Server 10.1.2

We get some questions about the certification of applications developed in JDeveloper 10.1.3 and deployed in the Oracle Application Server 10.1.2

We have a certification matrix published on OTN, in document "Application Servers Supported by JDeveloper".
You can see there that this combination is certified but under the following conditions:

A. For all applications, you need to reconfigure
your applications to use J2SE 1.4.2 and J2EE 1.3. See the JDeveloper documentation
for complete instructions.

B. For ADF applications only, you need to
install the ADF runtime libraries, using the ADF Runtime Installer. To start
the Installer, select Tools | ADF Runtime Installer from the main menu in JDeveloper.
Instructions for running the installer are in the JDeveloper online documentation,
or click Help in the Installer.

Point B is a common administrative task for most ADF Developers and should be rather obvious for them. If not, you can check document "How To Update Oracle ADF Runtime Libraries to Oracle Application Server 10g". See also my previous blog post about the Stand-alone installer.

Concerning point A, people are wondering what are these "complete instructions". You can find them under online help topic "Deploying ADF Applications".
Read more specifically, "Oracle Application Server Release 2 (10.1.2) Deployment Notes" and "Deploying to Application Servers That Support JDK 1.4".
You'll find all instructions there.

ADF Developer's Guide For Forms/4GL Developers

The "Oracle Application Development Framework Developer's Guide For Forms/4GL Developers" has been published on OTN.
It's available in HTML and PDF formats.

Kudos to the doc team and Steve.
It's really an excellent source of information and I'm sure it will help a lot of developers.
Add it to your bookmarks !

Oracle9i JDeveloper Version 9.0.4.3 available on OTN

Oracle9i JDeveloper Version 9.0.4.3 (build 1471) is available on OTN.

It may look surprising we still provide new releases of this old JDeveloper version.

The reason is that JDeveloper 9.0.4 is the last version of JDeveloper without the ADF (Application Development Framework).

End of support is foreseen in December this year.
So if you still use this version, we recommend that you migrate to JDeveloper 10.1.2 or 10.1.3

Stand-alone installer for the Oracle ADF runtime libraries.

Up to now, installing the ADF Runtime libraries in an Application Server could be done automatically from JDeveloper, but it required

  • either to install JDeveloper on the same machine as the Application Server,
  • or to map a local drive from a machine that already
had JDeveloper installed to the target Oracle Application Server
    machine.
Otherwise, you had to install them manually. See document "How To Update Oracle ADF Runtime Libraries to Oracle Application Server 10g" on OTN

There is now a third option available for 10.1.3 libraries as we just released the Stand-alone installer for the Oracle ADF runtime libraries.
You can download it from OTN.
The standalone version can be run from the command line, without requiring a JDeveloper installation.
